The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to step up efforts to secure the release of 416 women, children, and elderly persons reportedly held captive by Boko Haram in Borno State since March 30, 2026.
The appeal comes amid rising concerns over renewed insurgent attacks in the North-East, which have claimed the lives of 17 military personnel, including Brigadier General Oseni Braimoh.
Lawmakers also demanded a full investigation into the recent assaults on military bases, as well as reports of civilian casualties during security operations.
The Senate’s resolution followed the circulation of a video by the insurgents, in which they warned the government against attempting a forceful rescue and threatened to disperse the captives if their demands are not met within 72 hours.
The motion prompting the debate, titled “Urgent Need to Curb Attacks on Military Formations by Boko Haram Insurgents,” was sponsored by Tahir Monguno and supported by Ali Ndume and Kaka Lawan.
Presenting the motion, Monguno highlighted coordinated attacks on key locations such as Monguno and Benisheikh in Borno State, noting the significant loss of lives, including senior military officers.
He warned that the resurgence of insurgent activity threatens national security, food production, and ongoing efforts to resettle displaced communities.
During the debate, Ndume raised alarm over the condition of the abducted victims, stressing the urgency of swift government intervention to prevent further harm.
Other lawmakers echoed concerns about the growing insecurity. Diket Plang noted that repeated attacks on security forces are heightening fear nationwide, while Abdul Ningi suggested more drastic measures, including the possible suspension of political activities in heavily affected states until the situation improves.
In its resolutions, the Senate condemned the continued attacks by Boko Haram and observed a minute of silence in honour of fallen soldiers.
It also urged the Chief of Defence Staff and other service chiefs to carry out a thorough review of operations and logistics in affected areas, particularly Monguno and Benisheikh, to address gaps in strategy and equipment.
The lawmakers further called on the military to uphold rules of engagement, protect civilians, and investigate any allegations of misconduct during operations.
Communities were encouraged to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely intelligence, while the Senate also praised troops of Operation Hadin Kai for their bravery and urged the government to improve their welfare, equipment, and overall support in the fight against insurgency.
