The African Action Congress (AAC) has confirmed that activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has stepped down from his position as National Chairman of the party following his emergence as the AAC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made on Tuesday shortly after the party concluded its presidential primaries in Abuja, where Sowore secured the party’s ticket through a unanimous endorsement by delegates and party stakeholders.
In a statement issued after the exercise, the party revealed that Samuel Ajeigbe has now taken over as the new National Chairman of the AAC, marking a significant leadership change as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
According to the statement, Sowore officially relinquished his leadership role in line with the party’s internal transition process following his emergence as the party’s flagbearer.
The AAC presidential primaries, held in the Federal Capital Territory, witnessed delegates and supporters from various parts of the country endorsing Sowore amid loud cheers and celebrations. He was subsequently presented with the party’s flag as its candidate for the next presidential race.
While addressing party members after accepting the nomination, Sowore said the AAC remained committed to building what he described as a “new Nigeria” anchored on transparency, accountability, security, and responsible leadership.
He praised party loyalists for standing by the movement despite political intimidation, economic hardship, and challenges facing opposition parties in the country.
Sowore also used the occasion to criticise the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing the party of poor governance and attempting to shape public opinion ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reacting to claims surrounding participation in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential primary, Sowore dismissed reports that the APC had over 10 million registered members taking part in the process.
According to him, the figures being circulated were unrealistic, insisting that the ruling party could not genuinely boast of such a massive membership base.
He maintained that Nigerians were becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the current state of governance and would be looking for alternative leadership options ahead of the next general elections.
