A new chapter has begun in African football administration as Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to occupy a top position within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in its over 70-year history.
The milestone follows the resignation of CAF Secretary General, Veron Mosengo-Omba, who announced his decision to step down after more than three decades in international football administration.
In a statement released on March 29, 2026, from Cairo, Egypt, Mosengo-Omba explained that his resignation was motivated by a desire to focus on personal pursuits after years of service dedicated to advancing football across the continent.
He described his career as one centered on using football to unite people, promote education, and create opportunities for growth.
Mosengo-Omba also stated that he leaves his position with a clear conscience, noting that concerns and allegations surrounding his tenure have been addressed, allowing him to exit without any lingering issues.
Reflecting on his time at CAF, he expressed appreciation to the organization’s leadership, particularly CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, as well as colleagues and stakeholders who contributed to the progress of African football during his tenure.
He emphasized that CAF has recorded significant growth during his time in office and expressed confidence in its continued development moving forward.
