The youth wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a 72-hour deadline to reverse its recent decision on the party’s leadership or face coordinated nationwide protests.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, ADC National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufai, accused INEC of interfering in internal party affairs and undermining democratic principles. He insisted that the commission must recognise David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary of the party.
INEC had earlier updated its records to remove key figures within the ADC, citing a court directive to maintain the status quo pending the final judgment of an ongoing case. The decision is tied to a prolonged leadership crisis within the party, which began in 2025 following disputes over the transition from former chairman Ralph Nwosu.
However, ADC youths rejected INEC’s stance, arguing that only the courts—not the electoral body—have the authority to interpret legal rulings. They described the commission’s action as biased and a violation of due process.
Rufa’i maintained that the leadership produced during the party’s National Executive Committee meeting remains valid and legally recognised, warning that any attempt to alter it without a final court decision is unacceptable.
He also called on the National Assembly to investigate INEC’s actions and urged the judiciary to provide clarity on the matter to prevent further confusion.
The group further demanded accountability from INEC leadership, including calls for the resignation or removal of its chairman, alleging that the commission’s actions have damaged public confidence.
According to the ADC youth wing, failure to comply with their demands within 72 hours will trigger peaceful protests across all states and the Federal Capital Territory, with plans to mobilise supporters and civil society groups to occupy INEC offices nationwide.
Rufa’i stressed that the issue goes beyond party politics, describing it as a broader fight to defend democracy, rule of law, and institutional independence in Nigeria.
