The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has formally lodged a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) — and reportedly with FIFA — regarding what it considers controversial officiating in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final defeat to Nigeria’s Super Eagles
Algeria exited the tournament after a 2–0 loss to Nigeria in Marrakech on January 10, 2026. The FAF’s grievance focuses primarily on several decisions made by Senegalese referee Issa Sy, which they believe unfairly influenced the match. Among the points raised in the complaint:
- A denied penalty appeal that Algeria claim should have been awarded.
- Multiple decisions they view as questionable or biased in favour of Nigeria.
- Allegations that Sy did not shake hands with some Algerian players at full time.
- Accusations that Algerian journalists and media professionals were mistreated in the tunnel after the match.
As a result, the federation is seeking not only a review of the officiating but also the immediate suspension and removal of Issa Sy from the remainder of the tournament.
In response, CAF has confirmed it is investigating the broader incidents that followed the match — including confrontations between players and officials — and has referred all reports and footage to its Disciplinary Board for possible disciplinary action.
CAF has also condemned any inappropriate behaviour toward referees, match organisers, or other participants.
The tournament governing body’s investigation is ongoing, and any decision on Algeria’s complaint or potential sanctions could be announced in the coming days.
