Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned that Nigeria is slipping into a severe internal crisis, citing escalating insecurity, economic strain, and weakening democratic structures as key concerns.
In a statement released on Sunday through his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku revealed that his forthcoming trip to the United States will be aimed at drawing international attention to the country’s worsening situation.
He described the crisis as one that can no longer be ignored or minimized, stressing that violence across various regions—from insurgency in the North-East to banditry in the North-West and continued killings in the Middle Belt—signals a troubling decline in the government’s ability to safeguard lives and property.
According to him, the pattern reflects a broader systemic breakdown, with communities increasingly exposed to danger and citizens left without adequate protection. He added that any government unable to ensure security risks losing its moral authority to lead.
On the economic front, Atiku painted a grim picture of the hardship facing Nigerians, pointing to surging inflation, the weakening value of the naira, and reduced purchasing power. He attributed these challenges to inconsistent and ineffective policy decisions, noting that citizens are being pushed to their limits.
He also expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that declining confidence in governance and the electoral process could pose serious risks as the country approaches another election cycle. He cautioned against any attempt to undermine electoral integrity, saying it could have far-reaching consequences for national unity.
Addressing potential criticism of his planned engagement with international stakeholders, Atiku maintained that speaking out about Nigeria’s challenges is not unpatriotic. He argued that the country’s issues already have global implications and require honest acknowledgment.
He further urged the current administration to take decisive action, emphasizing that leadership demands results and accountability. Nigerians, he said, are expecting concrete solutions rather than explanations.
