Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift in the state.

In a statewide address delivered in Yola, the governor said his decision followed extensive consultations and was aimed at aligning Adamawa State with the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu. He described the move as being in the best interest of the state’s long-term development and stability.

The development comes shortly after a significant number of members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly reportedly left the PDP, altering the balance of power in the 25-member legislature. With the governor’s defection, key political stakeholders in the state — including cabinet members, elected officials, and party executives across wards and local government areas — are said to be moving with him to the APC.

Fintiri, who won governorship elections in 2019 and 2023 on the PDP platform, stated that the decision was strategic rather than personal.

He assured residents that governance would continue seamlessly and pledged sustained focus on infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, and economic growth.
However, some prominent political figures in the state, including Adamu Atiku Abubakar, have reportedly not joined the defection.

Impact on PDP’s National Standing

If confirmed, the move would further reduce the number of PDP-controlled states, leaving only a few governors under the party’s platform. Political analysts say continued defections at the state level could significantly reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape and influence future electoral dynamics.

Observers note that the shift signals a broader realignment within Nigeria’s political space, particularly as several opposition figures and lawmakers across different states have recently switched allegiance.
