Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition-backed opposition party, as part of preparations for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, during an event in Enugu State, where Obi explained that his decision was driven by the need to build a broad-based movement aimed at transforming Nigeria and confronting critical national challenges.
Obi described his move as a new beginning, stating that closing the year with this decision signals the launch of a “rescue journey” in the coming year. He also vowed to use every lawful means to resist election rigging in 2027.
The former Anambra governor used the occasion to call on opposition leaders to unite as a political family under the leadership of ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, in order to strengthen their efforts to challenge the ruling party.
Several prominent figures were present at the declaration, including former Senate President and ADC Chairman David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Senator Aminu Tambuwal, former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, as well as Senators Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji and other notable political stakeholders.
Obi’s move marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition dynamics as political actors recalibrate their strategies ahead of the 2027 polls.
