The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has questioned the political influence of former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, saying he lacks the capacity to deliver Rivers State to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 elections.
Wike made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a visit to the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja. He referenced previous elections to support his argument, noting that despite Amaechi’s prominence and role in national campaigns, his party failed to secure decisive victories in Rivers State.
He recalled that during the 2015 and 2019 elections, Amaechi held key positions within the ruling party at the time, yet the opposition struggled to gain significant electoral ground in Rivers.
The former Rivers State governor stressed that electoral success ultimately depends on the will of the people rather than the influence of individual politicians. He urged opposition parties to focus on building strong grassroots support instead of relying on high-profile figures.
Wike also challenged the broader strength of the ADC, casting doubt on whether its leadership could influence outcomes in their respective regions.
In particular, he questioned the ability of former Senate President David Mark to secure support for the party in Benue State, suggesting that political dynamics at the state level may not favour such expectations.
He concluded by encouraging all political parties to actively participate in the electoral process, rather than pre-emptively blaming outcomes on alleged irregularities.
