The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed a viral image claiming to show a newly designed ₦5,000 banknote bearing the portrait of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as false.
The image, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, suggested that the apex bank had unveiled a sample of a new high-denomination note. However, the CBN quickly refuted the claim in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, urging Nigerians not to be misled.
“This content is fake. Let the public be guided,” the bank stated.
The circulation of the misleading image has also reignited conversations about the possibility of introducing higher denomination currency in Nigeria.
It will be recalled that the CBN had proposed a ₦5,000 note in 2012, but the plan was later scrapped in 2022 following widespread public opposition.
Under the provisions of the CBN Act 2007, the apex bank holds the sole authority to design, print, and issue Nigeria’s currency, as well as manage its circulation.
