Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has stated that the choice of his successor in 2027 will be guided strictly by competence and commitment to the people of Oyo State, rather than personal loyalty to him.
The governor made this known during the 12th Omituntun Annual Ramadan Public Lecture held at the Ibadan North Local Government Motor Park, Agodi Gate, Ibadan. The event, which has been held annually for over a decade, brought together religious leaders, political stakeholders, and members of the Muslim community across the state.
Makinde explained that his administration’s achievements over nearly seven years were made possible by his dedication to the state and the cooperation of its people.
Among the accomplishments he highlighted was the payment of over N25 billion to offset gratuity arrears inherited from previous administrations. He also noted that the monthly gratuity payment had been increased from N1 billion to N3 billion, with a commitment that no retiree would be owed by the end of his tenure in May 2027.
The governor further referenced the ongoing upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport into an international facility, expressing optimism that the airport would begin international operations, including the airlifting of Hajj pilgrims, by 2026.
Makinde thanked the Muslim community in the state for their prayers and support since he assumed office in 2019, urging them to continue praying for peace and stability. He emphasised that Oyo State has remained relatively peaceful during his tenure and attributed this to collective cooperation.
Speaking on succession, the governor said he had reflected on experiences shared by some of his colleagues who felt disappointed by successors they had supported based on personal loyalty.
He stressed that his own decision would prioritise loyalty to Oyo State and the overall interest of its people. He also warned against a return to political violence, urging citizens to pray that the next governor would govern in the best interest of the state.
As part of activities marking the lecture, Makinde announced the donation of seven buses to selected mosques across the state’s geopolitical zones to support religious activities. He also presented a new SUV to the guest lecturer, Sheikh Jamiu Ajadi Sanusi (popularly known as Ami Olohun), in appreciation of his lecture themed “Contentment.”
In his sermon, Sheikh Sanusi encouraged residents to embrace gratitude and contentment, commended the administration’s developmental efforts, and advised the governor to remain cautious and steadfast. He emphasised that religion should foster unity rather than division.
The event was chaired by a former Governor of Oyo State and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, who described Ramadan as a period of reflection, patience, and tolerance.
Several political leaders, traditional rulers, religious scholars, government officials, and community stakeholders were in attendance. Special prayers were offered for the governor and the continued peace and progress of Oyo State.
