The Cross River State Government has confirmed a new case of COVID-19, marking the first reported infection in the state in recent years.
The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, during a press briefing in Calabar. He revealed that the case involves a 53-year-old Chinese national working with Lafarge in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
According to the commissioner, the individual arrived in Nigeria on March 17 and later developed symptoms weeks after arrival. His condition worsened while receiving care at a state facility, prompting his transfer to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where tests confirmed the infection.
Ayuk reassured residents that the patient is currently stable and responding to treatment. He also emphasized that the state’s health system has been strengthened to effectively manage such situations, urging the public not to panic.
The State Epidemiologist, Inyang Ekpenyong, disclosed that emergency protocols have been activated. This includes contact tracing and identifying individuals who may have come into contact with the patient.
She noted that although the virus remains present globally, efforts are focused on preventing widespread transmission within the state. Rapid response teams have already been deployed to the affected area to contain any potential spread.
Also speaking, the World Health Organization’s state coordinator, Yewande Olatunde, reminded the public that COVID-19 has not been eradicated and urged continued adherence to preventive measures.
Health authorities reiterated their commitment to containing the case and ensuring public safety, stressing that while infections may occur, swift action can prevent a larger outbreak.
