The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has reaffirmed the relevance of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s leadership and nation-building process, insisting that his role as a community leader gives him the moral authority to speak directly to those in power.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Sanusi argued that he does not require constitutional backing to offer guidance to the president or state governors on matters affecting the country.
According to him, traditional leaders draw their legitimacy from the people they represent, not from written laws.
“I don’t need the Constitution to tell me that if something is wrong in this country, I should speak to the President or a governor about it,” Sanusi said. “My authority comes from being a leader of the people.”
He acknowledged that while governors hold executive powers, traditional institutions remain critical to promoting good governance and social stability, adding that times have changed and leadership now requires broader collaboration.
Beyond governance, the Emir also called for greater inclusion of women in political and national development efforts, stressing that meaningful progress cannot be achieved without women playing active roles in decision-making.
Sanusi strongly condemned domestic violence, rejecting cultural justifications for abuse against women. He described such acts as violations of basic human rights, noting that power imbalance often fuels oppression.
“Violence against women is not culture; it’s about power,” he said, adding that women, children, the poor, and persons with disabilities are often the most vulnerable victims.
He emphasized that all Nigerians, regardless of gender or status, are entitled to protection and dignity, warning that culture must never be used as an excuse to violate human rights.
Known for his outspoken nature, Emir Sanusi has consistently used his platform to challenge policies, address social injustice, and advocate for reforms in education and economic management.
Although Nigeria’s constitution assigns no formal executive or legislative powers to traditional rulers, Sanusi maintains that their influence and responsibility in shaping society remain vital.
