Former Kano State Deputy Governor, Nasiru Gawuna, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking another shift in the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gawuna, who was the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2023 election, completed his registration and received his membership card at his ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area on Tuesday.
The event attracted several notable figures, including former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, alongside other party leaders and a large number of supporters.
Speaking after joining the party, Gawuna thanked his supporters and pledged to contribute to the growth and strengthening of the ADC in Kano State.
His move follows his recent resignation from the APC, which he described as a personal decision. In a letter dated March 29, 2026, he expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities he had during his time as a member.
Prior to this, Gawuna also stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, in line with a directive issued by Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring political appointees to resign in compliance with electoral regulations.
He acknowledged the trust placed in him by the President, noting that he was honoured to have served in various capacities, including in the education sector.
Political analysts believe Gawuna’s defection could strengthen the ADC’s position in Kano, given his influence and performance in the last governorship election.
His switch is part of a broader trend of political realignments in the state as key players reposition themselves ahead of the next general elections.
