The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has declared Friday, February 20, 2026 a work-free day and ordered a restriction of movement across the territory as preparations continue for the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.
In a special broadcast on Thursday, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, said the measures were intended to make it easier for residents to travel to their communities ahead of the polls and to ensure a peaceful, organised voting process.
The broadcast was backed by a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
Wike urged citizens to participate actively in the elections, noting that choosing chairmen and councillors for the six area councils — Abuja Municipal Area Council, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji and Kwali — is a vital opportunity to help shape the future of the FCT. He called on voters to conduct themselves responsibly and with respect for one another and the electoral process.
With approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the work-free day was declared to allow residents ample time to make necessary arrangements to take part in the elections without workplace obligations. Additionally, a restriction of movement across the territory will be in effect from 8:00 p.m. on Friday to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, with security agencies directed to enforce compliance.
Wike also commended President Tinubu for recently signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, saying it reflects a commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting transparent elections. He encouraged eligible voters to come out in large numbers and cast their ballots peacefully.
Security arrangements for the polls include deployments by the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies, which have announced additional movement restrictions on election day itself to help maintain order.
