The Federal Government has approved a ₦3.8 billion contract for the installation of a 2-megawatt solar mini-grid at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Kano State.
The development was disclosed in a statement by the university’s Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Affairs, Abdullahi Abdullahi. According to the statement, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, revealed the project during a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Musa Yakasai, in Abuja.
He explained that the contract, awarded by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, is expected to commence soon, with completion projected within three months.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader solarisation programme, aimed at improving power supply across critical sectors such as hospitals, tertiary institutions, and rural communities nationwide.
Abdullahi also noted that President Bola Tinubu had earlier approved a separate 4-megawatt solar project at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital following reports of fatalities linked to power outages.
In addition, the Director-General revealed that after facilitating the installation of 200 streetlights within the university, another 200 units are set to be delivered soon.
In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Musa Yakasai praised the initiative, stating that the existing streetlights have already improved campus security and enhanced the learning environment, particularly for students studying at night.
He also called for deeper collaboration with the Energy Commission in areas such as renewable energy research, training programmes, and the development of energy infrastructure within the institution.
