Former governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, has officially declared his intention to run for the Delta North senatorial seat.
His decision follows mounting pressure from influential political stakeholders across the nine local government areas in the district. Over the weekend, more than 50 prominent leaders visited him at his residence in Asaba, urging him to seek the All Progressives Congress ticket for the 2027 general elections.
The delegation, which included current and former lawmakers, senior government officials, and party figures, was led by the Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme. Prior to the visit, the group had convened at the deputy governor’s lodge, where they unanimously agreed to persuade Okowa to join the race.
During the meeting, concerns were raised about the current representation of Delta North in the Senate. A motion supporting Okowa’s candidacy was moved by former House of Representatives Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, and seconded by serving lawmaker Nnamdi Ezechi, receiving full backing from those present.
Other notable figures, including Chris Agbobu, Emma Onyiuku, and Doris Uboh, described Okowa as an experienced leader whose return would strengthen representation for the Anioma people at the federal level.
Responding to the appeal, Okowa expressed gratitude and accepted the call to run. He admitted regret over his role in supporting the current senator and assured supporters of his commitment moving forward.
“I feel deeply honoured by this show of support. I accept your request, and together, we will work and succeed. I will not let you down,” he said.
The Deputy Governor reaffirmed that the bid has the full backing of political leaders and the people of the district, describing it as a collective mission for the future of Delta North.
