Heavy security presence was observed at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Thursday, following reports of a possible protest by members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Personnel of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force were deployed around the premises, with armoured vehicles stationed at key points as authorities moved to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
The development comes amid escalating tensions within the ADC, where a leadership dispute has divided the party into rival factions.
Sources indicate that some aggrieved members had planned to demonstrate at the commission’s office over recent decisions affecting the party’s leadership.
Earlier, INEC announced the removal of the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the party, citing a subsisting court order.
According to the commission, the action was taken in compliance with a directive from the Court of Appeal instructing all parties to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of an ongoing case at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
INEC also disclosed that it had received conflicting communications from different factions within the party, each claiming legitimacy.
As a result, the electoral body stated that it would suspend engagement with all groups within the ADC until the court delivers a final ruling on the matter.
The situation has sparked reactions among party members, with some expressing dissatisfaction over the commission’s stance.
Meanwhile, access to parts of the INEC headquarters has been restricted, as security operatives continue to maintain a strong presence to forestall any potential unrest.
