Cristiano Ronaldo is on the verge of making football history after being included in Portugal national football team’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by head coach Roberto Martínez.

At 41, the legendary forward could become the first player ever to feature in six different World Cup tournaments — another remarkable chapter in his iconic career.

Martínez defended Ronaldo’s inclusion, insisting the veteran striker still plays a crucial role both on the pitch and inside the dressing room. According to the Portugal boss, Ronaldo’s leadership, experience, and winning mentality remain invaluable to the squad.

The squad announcement, however, came with a few surprises, as midfielders Mateus Fernandes and João Palhinha were left out despite impressive performances at club level.

Speaking on Portugal’s World Cup ambitions, Martínez admitted his side are strong contenders but stopped short of calling them favorites, stressing that mentality and handling pressure will be key factors in the tournament.
