Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has refuted claims that he recently declared interest in running for Nigeria’s presidency.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Baba-Ahmed said reports suggesting he had entered the presidential race were inaccurate and based on a misreading of his remarks.

“I did not declare to contest the presidency,” he stated, explaining that his recent comments were solely about reaffirming his continued membership of the Labour Party amid ongoing political conversations.

According to him, while future political possibilities cannot be ruled out, no formal decision or announcement has been made.

The clarification follows widespread reactions on social and traditional media, where his earlier statements were interpreted as a signal of presidential ambition ahead of the next general election.

Baba-Ahmed stressed that any declaration would only come after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases its official timetable and the Labour Party opens its internal processes to interested aspirants.

“What I said was simply that I remain in the Labour Party. Any declaration must wait for INEC’s timetable and the party’s guidelines,” he said.

He also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, criticising how social media narratives can distort facts, and urged professional media organisations to uphold accuracy and responsibility in political reporting.
