U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly criticised Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, expressing disappointment over her refusal to support military action against Iran.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Trump said he was surprised by Meloni’s position, stating that he had previously viewed her as courageous but now felt otherwise. He accused her of failing to take a firm stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, suggesting such inaction could pose a threat to European security.
The remarks came shortly after Meloni criticised Trump for his comments about Pope Leo XIV, who has consistently called for peace amid tensions in the Middle East. Meloni described Trump’s earlier remarks about the Pope as unacceptable.
Despite their previously close relationship, Trump revealed that he and Meloni have not communicated recently. He also faulted her for what he described as insufficient support for NATO and broader Western military efforts, particularly regarding concerns over Iran and strategic regions like the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump further criticised Europe, arguing that many countries are reluctant to defend key global energy routes. He also linked immigration issues to broader challenges facing Italy and other European nations.
Meloni, who has led Italy since 2022, has often positioned herself as a bridge between the United States and Europe on major geopolitical issues.
Her allies and political opponents in Italy reacted quickly to Trump’s remarks. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to Western alliances but stressed that such partnerships must be built on mutual respect. He defended Meloni as a leader who speaks her mind and prioritises Italy’s national interests.
Meanwhile, Elly Schlein condemned Trump’s comments as disrespectful, reiterating Italy’s constitutional stance against war.
The exchange highlights growing tensions between two leaders who were once seen as closely aligned on global issues.
