The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has released former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, shortly after news of his mother’s death.
El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, after being charged with multiple offences related to alleged money laundering and the mismanagement of public funds. He was previously arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna, where his bail application was adjourned to March 31.
Confirmation of his release came from his son, Bashir El-Rufai, who shared the update publicly while expressing appreciation to supporters.
The development follows the passing of El-Rufai’s mother, Hajiya Umma, whose death was earlier announced by another family member, Bello El-Rufai. She reportedly died in Cairo, Egypt.
Sources indicate that arrangements are being made to return her remains to Nigeria for burial.
Meanwhile, several prominent figures, including Bola Tinubu, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, have extended condolences to the former governor and his family during this period.
