The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has instructed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to halt all public announcements and arrangements related to the planned voter revalidation exercise.
This directive was contained in a letter dated April 4, 2026, and signed by the commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.
While suspending public-facing activities, INEC directed the commissioners to continue internal preparations, including mobilising personnel and getting voter enrolment equipment ready.
According to the notice, RECs are to pause all publicity efforts and await further instructions before proceeding with the exercise.
Earlier in the week, the commission had announced plans to begin a nationwide voter revalidation exercise on April 13, 2026, aimed at updating the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a related development, INEC also announced a change in its scheduled meeting with RECs. The meeting, initially planned as a physical gathering on April 9, will now be held virtually via Zoom.
The commission advised all RECs to remain in their respective states and wait for login details, which will be communicated once arrangements are finalised.
INEC expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by these changes and assured commissioners that further guidance would be provided in due course.
