The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially scheduled Nigeria’s 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, February 20, 2027, with governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls set for Saturday, March 6, 2027.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan announced the timetable at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, outlining the key dates for the next general election cycle amid ongoing concern over delays in the passage of the Electoral Amendment Act at the National Assembly.
The commission had previously stated that it had completed work on the election schedule despite the legislative hold-up, and submitted its proposed timetable to lawmakers for consideration. Amupitan noted that proposals could be affected if changes occur in the Electoral Act before its final passage.
The announcement marks a significant step forward in election preparations as political parties, candidates, and Nigerians await the formally released full timetable and schedule of activities, including dates for primaries and campaign periods.
Although earlier in January the commission had cautioned the public to disregard unofficial timetables circulating online — saying they were not authentic — the latest announcement is confirmed by INEC’s official communication.
