FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed confidence that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will deliver a memorable experience for football fans around the world as preparations intensify across the host nations.
The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, will feature an expanded 104-match format, making it the biggest World Cup in football history.
Speaking through a statement published on FIFA’s official website, Infantino said excitement is rapidly growing ahead of the competition and praised the level of preparation taking place across all host cities.
Host Cities Preparing for Massive Global Event
According to Infantino, all 16 host cities are working extensively to ensure visitors and football supporters enjoy a world-class tournament atmosphere.
He revealed that fan festivals, viewing centres and entertainment activities are already being organised across the three countries to create a unique experience for supporters.
The FIFA president also noted that governors, mayors and local authorities have remained actively involved in preparations ahead of the opening match scheduled for June 11 in Mexico City.
Mexico is expected to face South Africa in the opening fixture of the tournament.
FIFA Introduces New Fan Experience for 2026 Tournament
Infantino also announced several new initiatives designed to improve fan engagement during the World Cup.
One of the major additions includes a partnership with Fanatics Fest in New York, where FIFA plans to host special activities and media events before the tournament final.
He further confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup final will feature the competition’s first-ever halftime show in collaboration with Global Citizen.
According to him, the halftime event will include performances by international music stars and will also promote awareness around global education initiatives.

The 2026 edition will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams and 104 matches, significantly expanding the scale of the competition.
Millions of fans are expected to travel across the host nations, while billions around the world are projected to follow the tournament through television and digital platforms.
Infantino described the competition as one of the most ambitious sporting events ever organised, adding that FIFA and the host countries are fully prepared to welcome the world.
