Iran Executes Two Alleged Opposition Members Amid Rising Tensions
Iranian authorities have carried out the execution of two individuals accused of belonging to an opposition group, marking the latest in a series of similar actions in recent days.
According to reports from the judiciary’s official outlet, Mizan Online, Abolhassan Montazer and Vahid Baniamerian were executed after being convicted and having their sentences confirmed by the country’s Supreme Court.
The two men were found guilty of charges including involvement in alleged terrorist activities, sabotage, and attempting to challenge the authority of the Islamic Republic. They were also linked to the banned People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), a group Tehran considers a terrorist organisation.
Their executions follow earlier reports that four other individuals associated with the same group were put to death earlier in the week.
These developments come amid heightened tensions in the region, following a reported escalation involving Iran, the United States, and Israel after strikes in late February triggered a broader conflict.
Human rights organisations have long raised concerns about Iran’s use of capital punishment, noting that the country ranks among the highest globally in terms of executions.
In recent weeks, several other executions have been reported. This includes individuals accused of collaborating with foreign governments during anti-government protests, as well as others convicted of killing security personnel.
One notable case in March involved Kouroush Keyvani, a dual Iranian-Swedish national executed on espionage charges, which drew criticism from European officials.
The latest executions underscore growing concerns over Iran’s internal security crackdown amid ongoing political unrest and regional instability.
