President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran has strongly criticised comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump about Pope Leo XIV, describing them as offensive and disrespectful to both the Pope and Jesus Christ.

Trump had earlier expressed disapproval of the Pope, calling him “weak on crime” and criticising his stance on global affairs. His remarks came after the pontiff reportedly voiced concerns over ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The U.S. leader also accused the Pope of bias against his administration, arguing that the Vatican failed to acknowledge actions taken during the COVID-19 period. He further stated that he would not support a Pope who appears lenient on issues like Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The comments triggered widespread backlash internationally.

Responding via social media, Pezeshkian condemned the remarks on behalf of Iran, stating that insulting the Pope amounts to an affront to values of peace and respect associated with Jesus. He emphasized that such statements are unacceptable to people who uphold dignity and mutual respect.

The exchange comes amid already heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, following recent military confrontations and unsuccessful diplomatic talks held in Islamabad.

The situation continues to draw global attention as political and religious sensitivities intersect on the international stage.
