Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has suggested that the recent surge in insecurity across the country is largely connected to political activities ahead of the next general elections, expressing confidence that the situation will improve after the polls.
Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Nigerian Revenue Service Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, where he also commended the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the Senate President, the current security challenges are partly driven by political interests. He argued that some individuals who are dissatisfied with the government’s performance may be encouraging unrest as the nation moves closer to another election cycle.
Akpabio maintained that the insecurity being experienced now is temporary and predicted that it would reduce significantly once the elections are concluded.
He also criticised opposition figures, appearing to reference Peter Obi, whom he accused of abandoning the political movement that supported him during the last presidential election.
The Senate President urged Nigerians to remain patient with the current administration, stating that the government is making steady progress.
During the event, he also praised Zacch Adedeji for his performance in managing Nigeria’s tax system, describing him as an effective and dedicated administrator.
The ceremony was attended by several senior government officials, including Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, among others.
The newly commissioned Nigerian Revenue Service headquarters is a 16-storey complex made up of three towers and is designed to house approximately 3,000 employees.
