The Kano State Government has sanctioned ₦99 million for the initial phase of a rabies control campaign aimed at vaccinating a minimum of 10,000 dogs across the state.
The announcement was made on Saturday by Halima Gadanya, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development. The funding was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to protect residents from rabies and other zoonotic diseases.
The programme will be managed by the ministry under the oversight of Commissioner Aliyu Isah Aliyu, who described the vaccination drive as a vital public health measure. Rabies, a viral infection most commonly transmitted through dog bites, is nearly always fatal once symptoms develop, making immunisation critical in disease control.
As part of the broader strategy, the government plans to conduct a state-wide dog census to gather accurate data for planning, monitoring and long-term rabies control efforts. Residents are being encouraged to bring their dogs forward for vaccination and work with health officials to help reduce the spread of the disease.
The initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to enhancing public health, boosting livestock sector development, and improving community safety across Kano State.
