King Charles III has arrived in the United States for a high-profile state visit aimed at strengthening ties with Donald Trump, as both nations navigate growing diplomatic tensions.

The British monarch, accompanied by Queen Camilla, landed in Washington for a four-day trip designed to reinforce the long-standing US–UK alliance. The visit comes at a sensitive time, with disagreements over the Iran conflict putting pressure on what is often referred to as the “special relationship.”

The royal couple was received at Joint Base Andrews by UK Ambassador Christian Turner and U.S. officials. This marks Charles’s first official visit to the U.S. since becoming king in 2022, and it coincides with events marking America’s 250th independence anniversary.

At the White House, President Trump and Melania Trump are expected to host the monarch and his wife, with activities including a private meeting, formal reception, and state dinner.

In a historic highlight, King Charles is scheduled to address the U.S. Congress—becoming the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.

However, the visit unfolds against a backdrop of political strain. Trump has recently criticised UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his stance on the Iran conflict, adding tension to the diplomatic landscape.

Security has also been heightened following a recent shooting incident at a Washington gala attended by the U.S. president, though officials have assured that comprehensive measures are in place.

Despite the challenges, Trump struck a friendly tone ahead of the visit, describing King Charles as a close ally. Observers say the trip will test the monarch’s diplomatic skill as he balances ceremonial duties with complex geopolitical realities.

The itinerary also includes a stop in New York to visit the September 11 memorial, before the royal couple travels onward to Bermuda—marking Charles’s first visit to a British overseas territory as king.

Analysts believe the visit could play a key role in easing tensions and reaffirming cooperation between both countries at a critical moment in global affairs.
