Former Kano State governor and prominent political figure, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is reportedly preparing to exit the New Nigeria Peoples Party and join the African Democratic Congress as part of strategic moves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources indicate that the anticipated defection follows a series of consultations involving Kwankwaso, key leaders of the Kwankwasiyya movement, and top members of the ADC, aimed at strengthening opposition alliances.

In recent weeks, Kwankwaso is said to have engaged in high-level discussions with several influential political figures, including Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson, as part of efforts to build a strong coalition capable of challenging the ruling party.

He also reportedly met with party stakeholders in Kano State to consolidate support for the planned move.

The development comes at a time of increasing tension between Kwankwaso and his political ally-turned-rival, Abba Yusuf. The relationship has reportedly deteriorated following Yusuf’s recent alignment with the All Progressives Congress, alongside several lawmakers and appointees.

Kwankwaso has openly criticised the move, describing it as a betrayal, a stance that has further deepened divisions within the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Political observers believe the shift signals a broader attempt by opposition figures to realign forces and mount a stronger challenge in the 2027 elections.
