The faction of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State loyal to national chairman, , has commenced the free distribution of expression of interest and nomination forms to aspirants preparing for the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Friday in Lafia by the state chairman of the party, , during a press briefing at the party secretariat.
According to Ombugu, the decision to issue the forms at no cost was aimed at reducing the financial burden on aspirants amid the current economic hardship in the country.
He explained that the free forms cover governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly positions, adding that the move would encourage more qualified individuals to participate in the democratic process regardless of their financial background.
Ombugu maintained that his faction remains the authentic leadership of the party in Nasarawa State despite the ongoing leadership dispute between the camps of Julius Abure and former Finance Minister, .
He stated that the party is fully committed to preparing for the 2027 elections and ensuring candidates emerge through a transparent process.
“We want credible and competent individuals to contest under the Labour Party platform. The party belongs to the people, and that is why we decided to make the forms free,” he said.
The chairman also disclosed that the party primaries for various positions would hold between May 27 and May 29, 2026.
According to the timetable released by the party, governorship and House of Assembly primaries will take place on May 27, while Senate and House of Representatives primaries are scheduled for May 29.
Speaking on the forthcoming Nasarawa North Senatorial by-election fixed for June 20, 2026 by the , Ombugu said the party would conduct its senatorial primary on May 25 to select a candidate for the poll.
The by-election became necessary following the death of Senator .
Meanwhile, Labour Party governorship aspirant, , promised to tackle unemployment and insecurity in the state if elected in 2027.
Afaka criticized the ruling administration in Nasarawa State, claiming the government has failed to deliver meaningful progress to the people.
He assured residents that his ambition is driven by a desire to bring positive transformation to the state rather than personal gain.
The Labour Party has continued to experience internal divisions nationwide due to the prolonged leadership crisis between the Julius Abure-led faction and supporters of Nenadi Usman, even as both camps intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
