Seyi Makinde has extended his sympathy to the families of schoolchildren and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oyo State, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to secure their safe return.
In a message released to commemorate both Children’s Day and the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the governor said his thoughts remained with the affected families who are currently facing uncertainty and pain following the attack in Oriire Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on May 15 when armed attackers stormed three schools in the area and kidnapped several pupils — including very young children — alongside members of staff.
The attack also claimed lives. A teacher identified as Adesiyan Adegboye was reportedly killed during the invasion, while another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was later murdered while in captivity, sparking widespread anger and renewed calls for urgent government action.
In a statement shared on his official social media platform, Makinde acknowledged the emotional burden being carried by the affected families during what should have been a period of celebration and togetherness.
According to him, the state government remains committed to ensuring the victims are rescued safely while security agencies continue operations aimed at restoring peace in the affected communities.
The governor also prayed for calm and stability across the state during the festive season.
Reports indicate that the abductors have allegedly established communication with representatives linked to the state government, although officials have not confirmed whether the negotiations are being handled directly by the governor or through intermediaries.
Children’s Day is observed annually in Nigeria on May 27 to celebrate children and promote awareness about their welfare, safety, and education. This year’s commemoration coincided with the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir festivities, creating a rare overlap between the two significant occasions.
