The Nigerian Army is radically expanding its operational footprint across the country to secure vulnerable areas and drastically cut down response times to emerging security threats.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Chief of Army Staff First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja on Monday, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, unveiled a comprehensive restructuring plan. The overhaul includes the rollout of new brigades, battalions, and specialized tactical formations across six states.
Mapping the New Deployments
To neutralize asymmetric threats, the military has positioned fresh assets in several critical zones:
South-East: The newly formed 15 Brigade and its tactical units have been deployed to counter insecurity in Anambra and Imo states.
North-Central & Kogi: The 12 Battalion has been activated in Anyigba, alongside the launch of a targeted regional security initiative dubbed Operation Savannah Shield.
North-West & North-East: Combat readiness has been boosted with the 226 Battalion in Ganye (Adamawa), the 247 Reconnaissance Battalion in Mubi, and Army Headquarters Logistics Base 4 in Gusau (Zamfara).
Kwara State: Army Logistics Base 5 has been established in Ilorin to solidify tactical support.
The 28,000 Manpower Influx
An expansion of this magnitude requires a massive influx of personnel. Gen. Shuaibu disclosed that the recently established Depot Nigerian Army in Amasiri, Edda (Ebonyi State) is fully operationalized to meet a direct mandate from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The facility will drive the recruitment and elite training of 28,000 additional troops to decisively address military manpower shortages.
According to the COAS, these coordinated upgrades have already yielded immense success, heavily fracturing criminal syndicates, degrading enemy strongholds, and returning a sense of safety to areas previously plagued by unrest.
Aviation as a Game-Changer
In a historic military milestone, the Army Chief highlighted the growing dominance of Nigerian Army Aviation as a massive force multiplier.
For the first time in the North-East conflict, domestic army aviation assets successfully executed complex troop insertion and extraction missions in the highly volatile Tumbutu Triangle.
Gen. Shuaibu concluded by expressing deep appreciation to President Tinubu for prioritizing the military through aggressive hardware procurement, infrastructural upgrades, and robust personnel welfare packages—including updated allowances and improved healthcare—which continue to keep combat morale at an all-time high.
