NEW DIPLOMACY FOCUS! Tinubu Repositions Foreign Policy to Put Nigerians First
President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has announced a major shift in Nigeria’s foreign policy direction, placing citizens and diaspora engagement at the heart of international relations.

The directive was delivered on Monday during the opening of an induction programme for newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, representing the President.

Under the revised approach, the existing 4D Doctrine—Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora—has been restructured to prioritise the welfare and interests of Nigerians, ensuring that diplomatic engagements translate into real benefits for citizens.

Tinubu tasked the envoys with improving Nigeria’s global image while actively attracting foreign investment and partnerships that support national growth.

He emphasised that their appointments reflect strong confidence in their ability to represent and advance Nigeria’s interests abroad, especially at a time when global dynamics demand more strategic engagement.

The President also urged diplomats to embrace a modern, results-driven approach by blending traditional diplomacy with digital tools, public engagement, and effective communication strategies.

Highlighting the importance of their roles, he called for professionalism, integrity, and patriotism in carrying out their duties.

He further encouraged the envoys to make the most of the induction programme, noting that it is designed to prepare them for the evolving demands of global diplomacy.
