The Comptroller‑General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on Wednesday inaugurated a modern educational complex at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri, Lagos, as part of the agency’s corporate social responsibility efforts.
The newly completed facility — consisting of four air‑conditioned classrooms, a library, an ICT centre and a borehole — was officially commissioned amid dignitaries, security officials and stakeholders. Customs officials said the project aims to provide inmates with improved access to education and digital learning tools.
Addressing the event, Comptroller‑General Adeniyi said the initiative reflects a broader approach to national security, one that goes beyond enforcement to include rehabilitation and reintegration.
He stressed that education is a powerful tool for correction and can reduce the likelihood of reoffending, equipping inmates with skills to contribute productively upon release.
“This project represents more than bricks and mortar. It represents belief — belief in a second chance, belief in rehabilitation, belief in the power of education to transform lives,” Adeniyi said.
Representatives of the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service welcomed the development as a significant step toward deepening correctional reform, emphasising that structured education and rehabilitation are essential components of successful reintegration.
The Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Joy Edeldouk, whose tenure as Kirikiri Area Controller helped launch the project, was recognised for her role in bringing the initiative to fruition, with stakeholders describing the effort as a model of cooperative leadership.
A representative of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) at Kirikiri Lighter Terminal praised the investment in human capital, calling it an example of responsible and visionary leadership that extends the Customs Service’s impact beyond revenue generation and border security.
Officials said the education complex is now operational and will enhance classroom capacity, improve access to reading and computing resources, and support the welfare of inmates at the custodial centre.
