Nigeria and the United States have intensified efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation on security, intelligence sharing and counterterrorism following a series of high-level meetings involving Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and top American officials in Washington.

Ribadu visited the United States on a three-day official trip from May 4 to May 6, where he held discussions with senior members of the US government, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The meetings centred on expanding strategic cooperation between both countries in areas such as counterterrorism, defence collaboration, intelligence exchange, cyber security and regional stability.

Nigeria Seeks Stronger Counterterrorism Support
According to a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Ribadu reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s longstanding relationship with the United States.

The NSA stressed the need for continued collaboration in tackling terrorism, violent extremism, cyber threats and transnational organised crime across West Africa and the Sahel region.

Ribadu also highlighted Nigeria’s frontline role in regional counterterrorism operations, particularly within the Lake Chad Basin, where security challenges linked to insurgency and armed groups continue to threaten stability.

Focus on Sahel Security Crisis
Discussions during the meetings reportedly addressed the worsening security situation across the Sahel and the growing need for coordinated international efforts to combat asymmetric threats and regional instability.

During talks with US Undersecretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker, Ribadu expressed appreciation for ongoing American support in:

  • Security assistance
  • Intelligence cooperation
  • Defence training
  • Humanitarian interventions
  • Capacity building initiatives

The Nigerian government said both countries agreed on the importance of strengthening democratic governance, peacebuilding and economic resilience across Africa.

Why the Meeting Matters

The latest engagement reflects Nigeria’s efforts to deepen international partnerships as insecurity, terrorism and organised crime continue to pose major challenges across the region.

Analysts believe closer cooperation with the United States could improve intelligence gathering, military coordination and technological support for Nigeria’s security operations.

The visit also comes amid increasing global concern over instability in the Sahel, where military coups, extremist activities and cross-border crimes have continued to escalate in recent years.
