NNPC Hails Dangote Refinery as Lifeline for Nigeria’s Fuel Supply
The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), Bayo Ojulari, has underscored the importance of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in stabilising Nigeria’s fuel market as the country’s own government refineries continue to struggle to meet domestic demand.
Speaking on Wednesday at a session titled “Securing Nigeria’s Energy Future” during the Nigeria International Energy Summit 2026 in Abuja, Ojulari said having a functioning local refinery has given NNPC vital “breathing space” as it works to maintain consistent fuel supplies for Nigerians.
He described the Dangote facility — capable of processing 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day — as a major relief for the country at a time when legacy state‑owned refineries remain largely unproductive. Ojulari urged Nigerians to recognise the refinery’s contribution to national energy security, regardless of their personal views about its owner.
“Thank God for Dangote Refinery… Whether you love Dangote or not, Nigerians should be grateful for this facility,” he said, remarks that drew applause from the audience.
While acknowledging that the refinery does not yet fully satisfy Nigeria’s total fuel needs, Ojulari said its operations have significantly reduced vulnerability in the fuel supply chain and relieved some of the pressure on NNPC’s own infrastructure.
He also noted that NNPC holds a shareholder interest in the refinery, which further strengthens collaboration between the two entities.
The NNPC boss pointed out that relations between NNPC and the Dangote Group have evolved from past tensions — which were marked by disagreements over crude supply terms, pricing, and regulatory issues — to a more cooperative partnership focused on maximising value for Nigerians under the Petroleum Industry Act.
He explained that, following discussions with Dangote and his management team, a framework for deeper collaboration was agreed upon, designed to enhance the refinery’s contribution to national fuel security while maintaining NNPC’s responsibilities.
