Former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has generated widespread reactions after making remarks suggesting that Nigeria’s present political leadership has fallen short of democratic expectations.
In a statement released on Thursday, Obi expressed concern over what he described as a steady erosion of democratic values, accusing some leaders of abandoning the principles they once defended during the country’s pro-democracy struggle.
He pointed out that many individuals who were active in movements such as the National Democratic Coalition are now in positions of power but are presiding over a system that, in his view, weakens democratic institutions and undermines fundamental rights.
Obi further noted that the current situation has led to a paradox where Nigeria’s former military ruler, Sani Abacha—widely known for authoritarian rule—is now being compared by some to today’s leaders in terms of governance standards.
He described this as a troubling reflection of the country’s political trajectory, stressing that leadership should be judged by its commitment to justice, accountability, and respect for citizens’ rights.
However, his comments have sparked mixed reactions across the political landscape. While supporters view his statement as a strong critique of present-day governance, critics argue that drawing comparisons between a democratic system and a military regime is inappropriate and potentially misleading.
Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until 1998, remains a controversial figure in the country’s history, often associated with repression, human rights violations, and the silencing of dissent.
