Governor Ademola Adeleke has summoned the management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over the ongoing blackout affecting Osogbo and several other towns across Osun State.
Describing the situation as unbearable, the governor said the prolonged power outage is seriously affecting residents and crippling businesses in the state.
He called on the electricity distribution company to explain the cause of the disruption and work closely with the government to find immediate solutions. According to him, while power challenges are a national issue, Osun State has been hit particularly hard and urgent action is needed.
Governor Adeleke also revealed plans to strengthen the state’s energy sector through alternative power sources, especially renewable energy. He noted that the Osun Electricity Law is already in place and that a regulatory commission will soon be established to oversee electricity generation and distribution within the state.
In the meantime, he directed the Commissioner for Energy to organise a meeting with IBEDC officials and consumer advocacy groups to address the crisis.
The power situation has already sparked protests in Osogbo, where residents and business owners took to the streets to express frustration over constant outages and rising costs of running generators. Many say they are struggling to survive as fuel prices continue to soar.
Responding to the complaints, IBEDC attributed the outages to reduced electricity supply to the region, noting that it is working with stakeholders to improve energy allocation.
