Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed concern over the reported arrest of Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, shortly after the cleric hosted him during a recent visit to the state.
In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi described the development as troubling and reflective of growing concerns about civic freedoms in Nigeria.
According to him, he received information early in the day that the respected religious leader had been taken into custody by authorities not long after their meeting in Kaduna on Sunday.
Obi warned that actions of this nature could weaken democratic principles, stressing that individuals should not face intimidation or punishment based on perceived political associations.
He noted that the situation highlights increasing concerns over freedom of expression and movement in the country, adding that democracy cannot thrive in an environment where dissent is suppressed.
The former governor called on authorities to uphold citizens’ rights and ensure that the rule of law remains the foundation of governance. He emphasized that freedom of speech and civil liberties are essential pillars of any functioning democracy and must be protected at all times.
Obi also urged those in positions of power to avoid actions that could further strain Nigeria’s democratic system, advocating for fairness and lawful engagement with citizens.
As of the time of this report, security agencies have not issued any official statement confirming the arrest or explaining the circumstances surrounding it.
The incident comes shortly after Obi’s visit to Kaduna State, where he met with political stakeholders as part of his ongoing consultations ahead of the 2027 elections. During the visit, he reiterated his views on decentralizing governance and highlighted Kaduna’s importance as a key economic and political center.
He also stressed the importance of unity, noting that national progress depends on building an inclusive and just society where all citizens can thrive.
