The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Justice Joseph Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The approval came on Tuesday after lawmakers reviewed and adopted the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. The committee is chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).
While presenting the committee’s findings during plenary, Senator Adegbonmire recommended that the Senate endorse the nomination of Justice Oyewole, who previously served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal.
Justice Oyewole’s nomination was submitted to the Senate last week by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in accordance with Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The request was formally read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio before being referred to the Judiciary Committee for screening.
Following the committee’s evaluation and favourable report, the Senate gave its final approval, clearing the way for Justice Oyewole’s elevation to Nigeria’s highest court.
