Spain has barred United States military aircraft linked to operations in Iran from using its airspace, signaling a stronger stance against the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The decision was confirmed by Spain’s Defence Minister, Margarita Robles, who stated that the country will not permit either its airspace or military bases to be used for activities connected to the war.
According to her, the restriction extends beyond earlier measures that limited access to jointly operated military installations, reinforcing Spain’s position of non-involvement in the conflict.
The move means U.S. military aircraft may need to adjust their flight routes when heading toward the Middle East, although exceptions could be made in emergency situations.
Spain’s position reflects broader concerns within its government over the legality and implications of the conflict. Officials have maintained that the military action lacks proper international backing and does not align with established legal frameworks.
Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo reiterated that the government’s decision is part of a wider policy to avoid participating in or supporting what it considers an unjustified war.
This stance has highlighted divisions among Western allies, as Spain distances itself from direct or indirect involvement while still maintaining its commitments within international alliances.
Earlier, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez openly criticized the escalation, warning that the situation risks spiraling into a broader and more dangerous conflict.
He argued that the military actions were carried out without adequate consultation with the international community and stressed that opposing Iran’s government does not justify external military intervention outside international law.
Sánchez also pointed to the lack of formal approval from key institutions, including the U.S. Congress and global bodies responsible for maintaining international peace, as reasons for concern.
Spain’s latest move underscores its effort to distance itself from the conflict while advocating for adherence to international law and diplomatic solutions.
