President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly directed political appointees in his administration who plan to contest elective positions in the 2027 Nigerian general election to step down from their current roles by March 31, 2026.
According to a circular attributed to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the instruction would apply to several categories of presidential appointees. These include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executives of federal agencies, parastatals, and government-owned companies.
The circular was reportedly signed by George Akume and issued by Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office.
Officials affected by the directive were said to be required to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office before the stated deadline if they intend to participate in party primaries or run for elective positions.
The reported directive was described as part of efforts to ensure compliance with electoral regulations, promote transparency in the political process, and provide equal opportunities for all aspirants ahead of the elections.
Preparations for the 2027 polls are expected to intensify following the release of the electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
