Security authorities in the United Kingdom have announced strict security measures ahead of the upcoming state visit of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that anyone violating temporary airspace restrictions around Windsor could face arrest and criminal charges.
According to Thames Valley Police, a coordinated security plan is being implemented in partnership with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and other agencies to ensure the safety of the visiting president, dignitaries, and members of the public.
Earlier, Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host President Tinubu during an official state visit. The Nigerian leader and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu are scheduled to stay at Windsor Castle from March 18 to March 19.
Police officials said the security operation will involve both visible and covert strategies. These include increased patrols, specialised units, and surveillance systems designed to protect attendees and ensure the smooth running of the historic diplomatic event.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of the Thames Valley Police Joint Operations Unit explained that the airspace restrictions form part of a wider security plan. Although there is already a permanent restricted airspace around Windsor Castle throughout the year, it will be expanded on March 18 from 7:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. to enhance protection during the visit. The restriction is being enforced in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority.
Authorities stressed that any unauthorised drone, aircraft, or airborne device operating within the restricted zone will be considered a violation of the Air Navigation Order, which could result in arrest and prosecution.
To reinforce security on the ground, numerous officers will be deployed across Windsor, including armed police units, search teams, mounted patrols, and road policing officers. Additional neighbourhood teams and Project Servator units will also interact with the public while monitoring potential threats using an extensive CCTV system and vehicle-prevention barriers.
Police have urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by contacting authorities through emergency or non-emergency channels.
Meanwhile, officials confirmed that several road closures and parking restrictions will be introduced from March 17, which may cause temporary disruptions in parts of Windsor. Residents and travellers have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly.
Authorities emphasised that enforcement of all security measures during the visit will be strict, warning that anyone who violates the restrictions could face immediate legal consequences.
