United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed serious concern over recent United States military action in Venezuela, warning that it may establish a troubling precedent under international law.
In a statement released on Saturday, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Guterres is “deeply alarmed” by the strikes and questioned whether established principles of international law were upheld.
The Secretary-General urged all parties involved in the Venezuelan crisis to pursue inclusive dialogue while respecting human rights and the rule of law.
US Claims Maduro Captured After Major Military Operation
US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had carried out what he described as a “large-scale” military operation in Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were detained by US troops and flown out of the country shortly after explosions were reported in Caracas and other major cities.
However, Venezuelan authorities have not confirmed these claims.
Maduro, who has led Venezuela since 2013, heads a left-leaning government that has long been at odds with Washington.
Venezuela Condemns Attack, Demands Proof of Life
Venezuela’s government strongly condemned the US action, describing it as a grave act of military aggression following months of heightened political and economic pressure from Washington.
Vice President Delcy Rodríguez demanded that the United States provide proof that Maduro is alive and well. Speaking during a phone interview with Venezuelan television, she said the government had no information on the whereabouts of Maduro or his wife following the attacks.
Global Reactions and Calls for Clarification
Russia responded by demanding immediate clarification regarding the reported detention of the Venezuelan president, while Iran and several other countries also criticized the US operation. Spain, meanwhile, offered to help mediate efforts toward a peaceful resolution.
The situation continues to draw widespread international attention as concerns grow over its legal, political, and humanitarian implications.
