The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has addressed public reactions to his decision to stand on an armoured vehicle while speaking to residents during a condolence visit to the Angwan Rukuba community.
The visit followed a deadly Palm Sunday attack that claimed the lives of about 30 people. During the visit, the governor spoke to grieving residents who had gathered in protest, choosing to address them from an elevated position inside a security vehicle—a move that sparked debate online.
In an interview with Channels Television, Mutfwang explained that the decision was purely practical, as it allowed him to be seen and heard clearly by the crowd.
According to him, security officials positioned him on the armoured vehicle to provide better visibility while addressing the large gathering.
He also noted that the residents were receptive and even reassured him of his safety during the interaction, urging him to come closer.
The governor criticised the backlash on social media, saying his actions were taken out of context. He emphasised that most of his time was spent directly with the people—comforting victims, inspecting the scene, and helping to calm tensions.
Mutfwang concluded that while he felt safe among the residents, security protocols had to be followed, adding that online narratives often focus on isolated moments rather than the full picture of events.
