At least 16 members of the House of Representatives have officially left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defections were announced during Tuesday’s plenary session in the Green Chamber by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu.
According to the lawmakers, their decision to exit the ADC was driven by lingering internal disputes and unresolved issues within the party.
Among those who made the switch are Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, Munachim Umezuruike, Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The development reflects a broader trend of political realignments linked to ongoing tensions within the ADC, with several stakeholders describing the situation as disruptive to party unity.
Notably, prominent figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have also recently aligned with the NDC. Their move is believed to be part of efforts to avoid internal conflicts and build a more cohesive political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement, Obi explained that his decision came after careful consideration of the country’s current challenges and the need to contribute more effectively to national progress. He emphasized that his move was not motivated by personal ambition but by a desire for focused leadership.
Both Obi and Kwankwaso have reportedly encouraged their supporters to prioritize unity and national development over internal disputes, urging cooperation within the new political arrangement.
