Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is preparing to resign from his position in the coming days as he gears up to contest the Oyo State governorship election.

The decision follows a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Adelabu presented a detailed account of his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.

In a statement issued by his media aide, the minister explained that his planned exit was delayed to allow him address pressing challenges in the sector and ensure continuity of ongoing reforms before stepping down.

He highlighted efforts to stabilise electricity generation amid challenges such as gas supply shortages, infrastructure repairs, and outstanding obligations to suppliers. He also noted the importance of securing presidential approval before formally declaring his political ambition.

During the meeting, Adelabu outlined key achievements under his leadership, including improvements in power generation, expansion of transmission capacity, and reforms aimed at boosting efficiency across the electricity value chain.

A major focus of his presentation was the introduction of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan—frameworks designed to guide long-term development, improve energy access, and strengthen sustainability within Nigeria’s power sector.

In response, President Tinubu commended the minister’s efforts, particularly in laying policy foundations for sector reforms, and gave his approval for Adelabu to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
