Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has reassured Nigerian workers of the National Assembly’s commitment to improving their living conditions through targeted legislative action.
In a message marking the 2026 International Workers’ Day, released in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio acknowledged the economic pressures facing workers and pledged continued efforts to address them.
He stated that the 10th National Assembly is fully aware of the rising cost of living and workplace challenges, emphasizing that the Senate remains focused on pushing laws that will guarantee a living wage, safer work environments, pension reforms, and increased job opportunities.
Akpabio pointed to the recent approval of the new National Minimum Wage Act and other welfare initiatives as clear evidence of the legislature’s commitment to workers’ well-being.
His remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with inflation, high living costs, and concerns about the sustainability of wages.
The Senate President also urged employers, both in the public and private sectors, to prioritize the welfare of their workforce, noting that better working conditions directly enhance productivity.
He paid tribute to workers across all sectors—including teachers, farmers, healthcare professionals, artisans, traders, civil servants, and security personnel—describing them as the backbone of the nation’s economy and democracy.
Akpabio further commended organised labour unions for their continued engagement and patriotism, assuring that the Senate will keep working closely with groups such as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to ensure workers’ voices are reflected in national policies.
